Bulgaria is a fast developing high income economy, the 10th largest in the European Union by total nominal GDP and one of the main destination for foreign direct investments in Central and Eastern Europe. Until the global financial crisis, the country registered an economic growth among the fastest in Europe (8.4% in 2008, triple of the EU average). 2019 marks the 70th anniversary of China-Romania relations. Bucharest is member of the Belt Road project and Beijing promoted bilateral cooperation in automotive, renewable energy, real estate and education. Romania will assume the rotating presidency of the European Union in 2019 and will promote China-EU ties and the 16+1 cooperation to attract new Chinese projects in the construction of Romania's infrastructure and nuclear power plants.
